Legal Mail vs. Personal Mail at Monroe County Jail: Which Address to Use

Monroe County Jail uses two separate mail routes. Mix them up, and your letter could be delayed - or returned. Personal mail gets routed to a central processing facility, not the jail itself. Legal mail works differently: it goes straight to the jail. Before you drop anything in the mailbox, take a moment to figure out which category your mail falls into.

Personal letters go through a central processing facility. Staff there open and scan each piece, then make it available electronically to the inmate on facility devices for 14 days. If you address a personal letter directly to the jail, it won't be forwarded - it gets returned to sender. This policy took effect May 18, 2022.

Tip: Effective May 18, 2022, personal mail sent directly to Monroe County Jail is returned to sender.

Sending legal mail or official documents? Use the jail's physical mailing address. Include the inmate's full name and inmate number so staff can route it correctly. Legal mail goes directly to the jail - not the central processing facility used for personal letters.

The jail limits who can send legal mail. Only legally approved entities qualify, and the jail maintains the current approved list. If you're a family member trying to get paperwork delivered quickly, here's what matters: legal mail still goes directly to the jail, and it must come from a sender on their approved list.

Note: Contact the jail for the list of legally approved entities (or if you’re unsure whether a sender qualifies).

Wrong address? Your mail won't get through. Official documents sent to the central processor instead of the jail won't be delivered. Personal letters sent directly to the jail instead of the central processor get returned to sender (per the policy effective May 18, 2022).

  1. Identify what you’re sending - separate personal letters from legal or official/business documents.
  2. Resend misrouted legal/official items to the jail - address it with the inmate’s name and inmate number and mail it to 145 L Cary Bittick Dr., Forsyth, GA 31029.
  3. Confirm before you mail time-sensitive documents - if you’re unsure whether something counts as legal mail or who can send it, contact the jail and ask.
