What Counts as Legal Mail vs. Personal Mail at Monroe County Jail
Where you send mail at Monroe County Jail depends on what kind it is. Personal letters go through JailATM's central processing address. Legal mail and certain official documents must be mailed directly to the jail.
Legal mail gets handled differently than regular letters. It must go directly to the jail - not to JailATM. Include the inmate's full name and inmate number on the envelope so staff can match it to the right person.

Some official paperwork needs special handling - documents where the inmate has to sign or fill out the original to complete a transaction. Think endorsing a check or transferring a vehicle title. Mail these to the jail's Business Office and include the inmate's name and inmate number on the envelope.
- Mail the original to the Business Office - Address it to: Attn: Business Office – Inmate Name/Inmate Number, Monroe Co Jail, 145 L Cary Bittick Dr., Forsyth, GA 31029.
- Wait for the Business Office to schedule review/signing - The Business Office (or a designee) coordinates a time for the inmate to review the document and sign if they choose.
- Plan for the original to leave the facility after signing - The process includes the inmate paying to have the document mailed out of the facility.
- Don’t include personal letters with these documents - Any general inmate correspondence included with transactional documents will be destroyed, and inmates aren’t permitted to keep the original documents sent through this process.
Note: Transactional originals sent through the Business Office won't stay with the inmate. Any regular correspondence you include with those documents will be destroyed.
