Travel light. Montana State Prison doesn't allow handbags, backpacks, or any medications inside - prescription or otherwise. Leave everything locked in your car before heading to check-in.
Note: Need to bring medication inside? The Warden can grant an exemption, but you'll need to arrange this ahead of time. Don't wait until you're at the door.
All Montana DOC property is tobacco-free - you can't use or even possess tobacco while on the grounds. Your vehicle must be locked during your visit. Handle both before walking toward the entrance so you don't have to double back.
Montana State Prison allows limited contact. You can share a brief closed-mouth kiss (about five seconds) and an appropriate embrace - but only at the beginning and end of your visit. Once the visit is underway, no kissing, hugging, or embracing is permitted.
- Stick to handholding (in full view) - handholding is allowed as long as visiting officers/staff can clearly see it.
- Keep your seating and legs separate - visitors and inmates aren’t allowed to interlock their legs or recline their knees against the other person.
Warning: Even during the permitted kiss or embrace, petting and fondling aren't allowed. Massaging, caressing, or rubbing of any kind is prohibited.
Don't assume you can bring medication through the door. All prescriptions and over-the-counter meds are supposed to stay locked in your car unless the Warden approves an exemption. Contact the facility ahead of time to ask about the process.
Tip: Lock your car and leave handbags, backpacks, and medications inside before entering. Skip tobacco entirely on DOC property. Keep physical contact to the brief kiss and embrace at the start and end of your visit - no petting, massaging, caressing, or rubbing.
