What to Know Before Your First In-Person Visit to Montgomery County Correctional Facility
Your first visit to Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF) goes smoother when you confirm the schedule ahead of time and arrive ready for screening. This checklist-style guide covers what you need to know — and helps you avoid the common reasons people get turned away.
Before you make the trip, call the MCCF Visiting Desk at (240) 773-9701. Confirm your loved one is eligible for visits, find out which day their housing unit is assigned, and ask what times apply. For general questions, MCCF's main line is 240-773-9700. The facility is located at 22880 Whelan Lane, Boyds, Maryland 20841.
MCCF uses a rotating visitation schedule based on housing dorms. Your loved one's visiting day depends on where they're housed - they'll usually get advance notice, but families still show up on the wrong day more often than you'd think. The schedule updates about every eight weeks. A visiting day that worked last month might not work now. A quick call before you go can save you a wasted trip.
Family visiting at MCCF happens during three daily time windows on scheduled visiting days: 8:00am–11:00am, 1:30pm–4:00pm, and 6:00pm–8:30pm. There is no family visiting on Wednesdays.
On your loved one's assigned visiting day, eligible inmates can receive one on-site visit lasting up to 30 minutes. That visit happens during one of the facility's designated time windows, so know which slot you're aiming for before you arrive.
Note: The visitation schedule updates about every eight weeks, and visits can be cancelled based on facility needs. Call the MCCF Visiting Desk to verify the current schedule before heading over.
During a visit, each inmate may have up to two visitors at a time. One of those visitors may be a minor child or infant.
Bring a photo ID. If you're unsure what forms of ID are acceptable, call the MCCF Visiting Desk at (240) 773-9701 before you go. The facility address is 22880 Whelan Lane, Boyds, Maryland 20841. The main phone number is 240-773-9700.
- ✓ Arrive early so you have time for security clearance, including a metal-detector screening.
- ✓ Expect a temperature screening before facility entry.
- ✓ While modified operations remain in effect, wear a mask inside the facility (visitors age 2 and under are excluded).
- ✓ Skip gaiter-type masks - they are not permitted.
Leave headwear at home - caps, hats, and hoodies aren't allowed. Staff can also refuse entry if your clothing is clearly inappropriate. If modified operations are still in effect when you visit, masks are required inside (no gaiter-type masks; visitors age 2 and under are excluded).
MCCF has public lockers for storing personal items. They're quarter-operated - bring a quarter, and you'll get it back when you're done.
Expect to go through screening when you arrive. All visitors and their belongings pass through a metal detector. If you can't clear the metal detector or meet other screening requirements, you may be denied entry.
Reminder: MCCF isn't responsible for items left in cars or stored in the public lockers. Keep valuables to a minimum and secure what you bring.
Visits can end suddenly if there's an emergency - the facility may terminate visiting immediately, and you'll be expected to leave right away. Visits can also be cancelled for operational reasons. If anything changes, call the MCCF Visiting Desk at (240) 773-9701 to confirm whether visiting is happening and what to do next.
