Morgan County Jail's new mail system (April 1, 2025) — what changes and what stays the same for legal mail

Starting April 1, 2025, Morgan County Jail's new mail vendor will photocopy all incoming physical mail and deliver those copies electronically to the facility. So when you drop a letter in the mailbox, the vendor scans it and sends a digital copy to the jail - the original never reaches the person you're writing to.

Effective April 1, 2025: Physical mail sent through the mail is photocopied, and the copies are delivered electronically to the facility.

All mail and messages go through staff review before delivery. If you're sending something time-sensitive, plan for delays - anything flagged during review can take longer, and content may be held back if it isn't approved.

Heads up: Staff review can slow delivery, and messages must be approved before they're delivered.

Legal mail is the exception. The jail says legal correspondence will still be delivered directly to the inmate - it won't go through the same photocopying process as regular mail.

Tip: If you’re sending legal mail, label it clearly as legal mail so it’s routed and handled under the legal-mail process.

Practical Steps

  • Use JailATM for non-legal messages when you want to skip the mailbox and send an electronic message instead.
  • If you send a physical letter, expect it to be photocopied and the copy delivered electronically to the facility.
  • Keep your message content “front-page safe” - all mail and messages are reviewed and approved by facility staff.
  • Plan for possible delays, since staff review happens before delivery.
  • For legal mail, follow the legal-mail route (and label it clearly as legal mail) since it’s handled differently and is still delivered to the inmate.

For personal updates or quick check-ins, sending an electronic message through JailATM is the most direct option. Messages still go through staff review, but you skip the physical-mail process entirely - no envelope getting photocopied under the new system.

  1. Decide if it’s legal mail - If it’s legal mail, use the legal-mail route; the jail says legal mail is handled differently and will still be delivered to the inmate.
  2. Use electronic messages for personal communication - For everyday notes and updates, you can skip the mailbox and send electronic messages through JailATM.
  3. Use physical mail only when you’re okay with copying and review - If you mail something physically and it isn’t legal mail, expect it to be photocopied with copies delivered electronically to the facility, and expect staff review and approval before delivery.

Bottom line: Legal mail will still be delivered to the inmate. General physical mail will be photocopied and delivered electronically to the facility starting April 1, 2025.
