Visitation

How to Visit Facility

Visiting is straightforward once you know the basics: scheduling, session limits, and who's allowed on the visit.

In-person visits are by appointment only. You'll need to call or email the prison where the person is housed and schedule in advance.

Under normal circumstances, you get one in-person visiting session per week, and each session can last up to two hours. The maximum is three approved visitors per session, so plan your group size accordingly.

Video visits aren't open to everyone by default. You need to be on the incarcerated person's approved visitors list.

Video visits can be on-demand or scheduled ahead of time through the Getting Out Visits app. If you're visiting from home, you can also use a personal computer with an internet connection, webcam, microphone, and a recent web browser.

Steps to Follow

  • Call or email the prison where your loved one is housed to schedule an in-person visit appointment.
  • Confirm the current limits before you go: normally one visit per week, up to two hours per session.
  • Keep your group small enough to fit the normal cap of three approved visitors per session.
  • For video visits, make sure you are on the incarcerated person’s approved visitors list.
  • Use the Getting Out Visits app to start an on-demand video visit or schedule one for a future date and time.
  • If visiting from home on a computer, have internet access, a webcam, a microphone, and a recent web browser ready.

Before you make the trip, confirm the details directly with the facility. Ask about the exact appointment process for in-person visits (who to call or email, and what information they need), whether the normal limits are in effect right now (one weekly session, up to two hours, up to three approved visitors), and whether you're listed as an approved visitor. For video visits, confirm you're on the approved list and whether you should use the Getting Out Visits app for on-demand visits, scheduled visits, or both. Policies can shift, so it's worth double-checking close to the day you plan to visit.

  1. Call or email the prison where the person is housed. Ask to schedule an in-person visit appointment and confirm the current session limits.
  2. Check the Getting Out Visits app. Use it to set up on-demand or scheduled video visits and review any app instructions for video visiting.
