Mule Creek State Prison: What to Expect During the March 9–13, 2025 Phone & Tablet Transition
Mule Creek State Prison’s phone transition is scheduled for March 9, 2025. CDCR has also said transition dates are tentative, so treat this as the planned date and keep an eye out for any last-minute changes.
The tablet transition at Mule Creek is scheduled for March 10–13, 2025. Keep in mind that CDCR considers these dates tentative, and intermittent outages can happen during the rollout window. Plan for some temporary disruption even if everything stays on schedule.
CDCR is switching telecommunications vendors because a new contract was awarded to Securus Technologies, LLC on February 21, 2025, replacing the prior ViaPath contract.
To reduce the risk of service interruptions during the changeover, CDCR also secured an interim agreement with ViaPath while the transition to Securus is completed.
When CDCR warns about "intermittent outages," they're saying calls and tablet services may not work reliably during the transition. Everything won't be down the entire time - but expect dropped connections, trouble getting through, or features that come and go while the switch happens. Since dates could shift, stay flexible during the March 9–13 window and have backup plans for staying in touch.
Immediate Actions
- ✓ Open a Securus account now using the website or the Securus mobile app.
- ✓ Don’t stress if you only receive phone calls: Securus says you don’t need an online account to receive free telephone calls.
- ✓ If you plan to use video calls or electronic messaging, set up the account ahead of time - Securus says an account will be required for those services.
- ✓ Assume there may be intermittent outages during the transition window, even if the schedule doesn’t change.
- ✓ If you usually rely on a specific day or time for calls, talk with your loved one ahead of time about a few backup times.
- ✓ If a call doesn’t come through, try again later - temporary disruptions are part of what CDCR is warning families about during the rollout.
- ✓ Expect a tablet swap: incarcerated people will turn in their ViaPath tablet and receive a new Securus tablet.
- ✓ Plan for content not to carry over: photos, e-messages, and media purchased through ViaPath will not transfer to the new Securus tablets.
- ✓ If there’s anything your loved one wants to keep from the ViaPath tablet (especially messages or purchased media), have them save what they can before the exchange happens.
Caller ID will change during the phone transition. At Mule Creek, the number or caller name you're used to seeing may look different around March 9, 2025.
You'll need a Securus account for video calls and electronic messaging. Good news: you don't need an account to receive free telephone calls - but once video calling and e-messaging go live, you'll need to sign up.
Heads up: ViaPath content won’t move over - photos, e-messages, and media purchased through ViaPath will not transfer to the new Securus tablets, and incarcerated people will have to exchange their ViaPath tablet for a Securus tablet.
Since dates are tentative and outages are expected, check CDCR's official rollout information for the latest Mule Creek schedule. Currently, the phone transition is listed for March 9, 2025 and the tablet transition for March 10–13, 2025.
