What to Bring (and Leave Behind) for Your First Visit to Inverness Jail
Your first visit goes smoother when you show up with the right ID, the right paperwork for kids, and as little extra stuff as possible. Use the sections below as your bring/leave checklist for Inverness Jail.
For an in-person social visit at Inverness Jail, arrive 30–60 minutes before the session you want. That buffer gives you time to sign in at the lobby and wait before being called into the visiting area. Heading in for a scheduled lobby kiosk (video) visit instead? The timing is tighter - arrive at least 15 minutes early. Think of that 15 minutes as your check-in window. Cut it close and you might lose the visit entirely.
At Inverness Jail, social visits are a privilege for the incarcerated person and only happen during set visiting hours. Even if you're ready to go, you can't visit outside those windows. For social visits, you also need to be on the inmate's visitor list before you show up. Video kiosk visits work differently - you don't have to be on the list. That's helpful if you're trying to visit sooner or aren't sure you've been added yet.
Tip: Give yourself extra time the first visit. Arriving early makes sign-in less stressful and gives you room for delays.

- ✓ A current, valid, government-issued photo ID for each adult visitor (state driver’s license, state ID card, military ID card, or passport)
Bringing someone under 18? Inverness Jail requires minors to come with the right adult - a parent, legal guardian, or an approved adult on the visitor list. One exception: if the minor is married to the inmate, bring proof of marriage.
- ✓ Copies of documents showing the minor’s relationship to the accompanying adult (birth certificate or adoption papers)
- ✓ Court orders showing custody (if custody is the reason you’re the accompanying adult)
- ✓ Notarized permission from the parent/legal guardian (when applicable)
You'll need to pass through a metal detector without setting it off. If you have a medical condition that makes the metal detector unsafe, let the officer at the desk know - staff can arrange an alternative search procedure.

- ✓ Keep your kiosk visit group to 3 people total
- ✓ Leave cell phones and other electronic devices out of the kiosk visit (they’re prohibited)
- ✓ A valid government-issued photo ID for every adult in your party
- ✓ If a minor is coming: copies of the documents that prove the accompanying adult’s relationship/authority (birth certificate, adoption papers, custody paperwork, or notarized permission when applicable)
- ✓ Only what you truly need for check-in (the less you carry, the easier screening tends to be)
- ✓ Anything likely to set off the metal detector - keep metal-heavy items to a minimum so you can pass screening without causing an alarm
