You'll need a valid, government-issued photo ID at check-in. If the visitor is under 18, Muskegon County Jail accepts a current school-year photo ID instead. Have it out and ready when you arrive so you're not digging through pockets at the front desk.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID (all visitors)
  • Current school-year photo ID (acceptable for visitors under 18)

Visits at Muskegon County Jail are by appointment only, and you need to schedule at least 24 hours in advance. Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time for check-in. Show up late and you won't be admitted. The visit is forfeited.

Muskegon County Jail enforces a strict clothing policy, and the fastest way to lose your visit is showing up in something that doesn't meet it. Extremely form-fitting or extremely loose-fitting clothing is not allowed. Neither is anything that exposes undergarments or excessive skin (including abdomen, breast, chest, back, or thigh). Pajamas are also a no-go. Pay close attention to hemlines and tops. Skirts and dresses can't be more than 3 inches above the knee. Tube tops, tank tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, and sleeveless tops are all prohibited. The same goes for clothing with obscene or inflammatory words, symbols, pictures, or gang insignia.

  • Choose clothing that is not extremely tight and not extremely baggy
  • Pick tops with sleeves (skip tube, tank, halter, spaghetti-strap, and sleeveless styles)
  • Avoid outfits that show undergarments or expose a lot of skin (abdomen, chest, back, thighs)
  • Leave pajamas at home
  • If you wear a skirt or dress, keep it no more than 3 inches above the knee
  • Wear clothing with no obscene or inflammatory words or symbols, and no gang insignia

Visitor limits are strict. Muskegon County Jail allows a maximum of two adults and two children under 12 per visit. Children age 12 and older count as adult visitors and must be scheduled as one. Anyone under 18 needs to be scheduled with an adult who is 18 or older.
