How Nassau County Jail Monitors and Records Phone Calls (And What That Means for Your Family)

If you talk on the phone with someone at Nassau County Jail, assume the call is being recorded. Attorney calls are the one exception, but only when the attorney's phone line has been officially registered with the facility.

At Nassau County Jail, all inmate phone calls can be monitored and recorded. This includes everyday calls to check on kids, sort out bills, or just hear a familiar voice. The facility's rule is simple: unless the call goes to a registered attorney line (more on that below), it can be listened to or saved.

Note: The only exception is for properly registered attorney calls. If protecting attorney-client privacy matters, the registration process is essential. See the attorney line registration steps below.

Nassau County's Sheriff's Department prohibits three-way calling, call forwarding, and conference calls on inmate lines. Even if your intentions are harmless (looping in a parent, adding a partner, or forwarding to a new number), the facility treats it as a rules violation.

  • Disciplinary action against the involved inmate participant
  • Loss of telephone privileges for the involved inmate participant
  • Potential criminal charges for the involved inmate and/or any other active participant
  1. Prepare an official letter on firm letterhead: The facility requires an official writing on firm letterhead.
  2. List the phone number(s) to be used for inmate client calls: Include the specific telephone number(s) the attorney will be using for these calls.
  3. Submit the letter to the Sheriff’s Department for registration: The request is subject to verification before the number is officially registered in the Sheriff’s Department system.

Reminder: Until an attorney's phone line is officially registered, calls are treated like any other inmate call and can be monitored or recorded. If privacy matters, get the registration done before relying on the exemption.
