Before Your First In-Person Visit at Sampson County Detention Center: What to Expect at the Prison Entrance
Your first visit can feel overwhelming when you don't know what to expect at check-in. Here's what happens at the entrance so you can walk in prepared—not caught off guard.
In-person visits are by appointment only. You'll need to call or email ahead to schedule - don't show up hoping for an open slot. No appointment? You'll likely be turned away at the door.
Tip: Call the day before your scheduled visit to confirm the facility’s visitation status so you don’t make a wasted trip.
When you arrive, you'll go through security screening. Everyone passes through a metal detector. If you're 16 or older, expect a pat-down and an electronic device scan as well. It feels intense the first time, but it's standard procedure - these steps keep contraband out and everyone inside safe.
Warning: If you refuse to comply with any search procedure, you will be denied entrance into the facility.
- Confirm your appointment before you go - visits are by appointment only, so make sure you’ve scheduled ahead.
- Clear the metal detector - every visitor must pass through and clear a metal detector search before entry.
- Complete the required searches (age 16+) - visitors 16 and older are subject to a pat/frisk search and a search by electronic device.
- Follow staff instructions the whole time - refusing any part of the search process means you’ll be denied entrance.
Cell phones are contraband. Bring one to the entrance and your visit ends before it starts. Leave it at home or locked in your car - don't risk it.
- ✓ Cell phones
- ✓ Smart devices (such as smartwatches or smart/AI glasses)
Most denials come down to a few common issues. Refusing any part of the search process is an automatic no. Bringing contraband - especially a cell phone - will end your visit immediately. Clothing matters too: shirts and shoes are required, and the dress code is enforced. Outfits that are too revealing or made of see-through fabric will get you turned away, even if everything else checks out.
- ✓ Shirts and shoes are required
- ✓ Do not wear halter tops, bare midriffs, strapless tops, tube tops, bodysuits, underwear-type T-shirts, tank tops, or fishnet shirts
- ✓ Avoid sleeveless shirts or dresses that reveal the female breast or lingerie, and avoid any see-through fabric
- ✓ Bermuda-length shorts are allowed if they’re no more than three inches above the kneecap
- ✓ Female visitors may wear dresses or skirts, as long as they meet the modesty/length restrictions
- Call or email to reschedule - visits are by appointment only, so you’ll need a new confirmed time if you can’t get in.
- Confirm the day before - a quick check the day prior helps you avoid another wasted trip.
- Show up ready for entry - come prepared for the appointment-only process so you can get through the entrance smoothly.
