Getting Through Security at New Lisbon: Metal Detector, ID Rules, and ADA Exceptions

Getting Through Security at New Lisbon: Metal Detector, ID Rules, and ADA Exceptions

Every visitor at NLCI must pass through and clear the metal detector before entering the visiting room. Dress with security in mind: skip clothing with metal snaps or zippers, keep jewelry minimal, and empty your pockets. The fewer items you need to remove, the faster you'll get through.

  • Jewelry (rings, bracelets, necklaces, watches)
  • Belts with metal buckles
  • Coins/keys and other loose metal in pockets
  • Phones and other electronics
  • Hair accessories or clothing items with metal pieces attached

NLCI gives you three attempts to clear the metal detector. After that, you're denied entry. If you're having trouble, remove jewelry, belts, and anything else metal before using up your chances. Have a pacemaker or other medical device that will set off the detector? Handle the medical exception paperwork before your visit - not at the door.

Anyone 16 or older needs a valid photo ID for every visit. Staff will compare your face to the photo, so bring something current and clear. If they can't identify you from the ID, you won't get in.

  • State driver’s license or state picture ID
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) ID
  • County welfare department ID
  • Military ID
  • Passport
  • Visa

Amish ID exception: NLCI may grant an exception for Amish visitors who do not possess photo ID due to their religion.

  1. Identify the issue ahead of time - If a medical appliance or assistive device will keep you from clearing and walking through the metal detector, don’t wait until the day of the visit.
  2. Complete form DOC-2424 - This is the form used for medical exceptions related to access to the visiting room.
  3. Submit DOC-2424 to the security director - NLCI requires you to submit the form to the security director.
  4. Get approval before you visit - You must receive approval prior to visitation, or you may be turned away at screening.

Need an ADA accommodation for your visit? Submit form DOC-2530 (Reasonable Modification Accommodation Request) to the NLCI ADA coordinator. For details on how the process works, NLCI references DAI Policy 300.00.35 (Americans with Disabilities Act).

Denied entry for a security reason? Stay calm and follow staff instructions. Once you're outside, write down exactly what happened - what you were told and why. If you have questions, NLCI's chain of command for visiting issues goes: visiting room sergeant → visiting room security liaison → visiting list unit social worker/visiting clerk → unit manager.
