Sending Money to Someone at New River Valley Regional Jail: Methods, Kiosk Rules, and the April 2018 Payee Requirement
If you’re trying to put money on someone’s account at New River Valley Regional Jail (NRVRJ), the process is straightforward once you pick the right method. The biggest “gotcha” is how money orders must be made out—especially since the April 2018 payee rule can cause mail to be returned.
Money you deposit at NRVRJ goes into the inmate’s account for things like commissary purchases and paying debts. Also, during booking, any cash, coins, money orders, or institutional checks the person has with them can be placed into an account under their name for the same purposes.
NRVRJ uses ConnectNetwork for deposits, and you have three main options: online, the onsite kiosk, or by telephone. If you’re trying to add funds quickly without coming to the facility, online and phone deposits through ConnectNetwork are the most direct routes.
Phone deposit help: To make a deposit by telephone through ConnectNetwork, call 800-483-8314. For additional support, call 877-650-4249.
If you’re depositing in person, there’s a deposit kiosk located in the NRVRJ lobby. The kiosk accepts cash, and it also accepts Visa or MasterCard credit or debit cards.

You can also drop off money orders in person. During the day, bring them to the front desk. In the evening, head to the window/counter at the end of the lobby hallway.
If you’re sending money through the mail, NRVRJ requires a money order made out to “NRVRJ” (no cash or checks). Don’t mail cash - NRVRJ says it will not be responsible for cash sent through the mail.
Payee rule (effective April 2, 2018): Money orders or certified checks written directly to the inmate are not accepted and will be returned to sender. They must be made payable to “New River Valley Regional Jail” in care of the inmate’s name, and the cost of returning them may be charged to the inmate’s account.
If speed is your priority, ConnectNetwork deposits (online, kiosk, or by phone) are usually the simplest way to get funds onto an account without waiting on the mail. The lobby kiosk is also a good choice when you’re already at the jail - just remember it only takes certain bill denominations for cash deposits. Mailing a money order can work if you don’t want to use online/phone options, but it’s the method most likely to get delayed or returned if the payee line isn’t correct. The April 2018 requirement is strict: if the money order or certified check is written out to the inmate instead of to the jail (in care of the inmate), it will be sent back. If you prefer money orders and want to avoid mail delays, consider bringing the money order in person - NRVRJ accepts them at the front desk during the day and at the lobby window/counter in the evening. Fees can apply to some deposit methods; check with ConnectNetwork or the facility for the current amounts.
- ✓ If you’re using cash at the kiosk, bring $5, $10, $20, $50, or $100 bills.
- ✓ If you’re mailing a deposit, use a money order made out to “NRVRJ” (never cash).
- ✓ For in-person money orders, go to the front desk during the day or the lobby window/counter in the evening.
To deposit by phone, call ConnectNetwork at 800-483-8314. For help with deposit or account issues, reach their support line at 877-650-4249.
