What Safeguard Training Covers and Who Must Take It Before Bringing Kids to Visits
Planning to bring a child to an NHDOC visit? Safeguard Training may be required first. Here's what the training covers, who needs to complete it, and how the virtual classes work.
Safeguard Training is an NHDOC class that walks you through the Visiting Room policy and rules. It’s meant to set clear expectations for how visits work so you know what to do (and what not to do) before you arrive with a minor.
The training also covers how to prepare a child for visitation. This matters for first-time visits - kids tend to do better when they know what the environment will look like and what's expected of them in the visiting room.
Safety focus: Safeguard Training includes information on grooming behaviors, coercion, offending cycles, and how to report an incident.
Not everyone has to take Safeguard Training, but certain situations trigger a requirement. If the incarcerated person must have a trained chaperone during visitation, that chaperone needs to complete Safeguard Training before any visit can happen. Additionally, inmates incarcerated for crimes against children - or with a history of such crimes - may have child visitation denied, further restricted, or conditioned on the accompanying adult completing NHDOC Safeguard Training.
Want to bring minor children into an NHDOC Visitation Room? You'll need to complete the Safeguard Training Application first. This kicks off the process for getting you into a class.
Key rule to plan around: Whoever completes Safeguard Training must be an approved visitor - and they will be the only person permitted to bring the minor visitors in for visits.
Safeguard Training is offered virtually - no in-person attendance required. That makes it easier to fit around work, school schedules, or childcare.
- Complete the online Safeguard Training application - this is required to be considered for a class.
- Watch for NHDOC to contact you - after you apply, a member of the NHDOC team will reach out to sign you up for a specific class date.
