Before Your Visit: Security Screening & What You Can’t Bring into NC Prisons

Everyone entering a North Carolina state prison goes through security screening. It's designed to keep contraband out of the facility. If you're 16 or older, you'll get a pat/frisk search before going in. Staff use the least intrusive methods possible, but the screening isn't optional. Refuse any part of it, and you won't be allowed inside.

You'll need to pass through a metal detector and clear it before entering. If something you're wearing or carrying sets it off, you'll have to resolve it before moving forward. Keep what you bring to a minimum - it makes the process faster.

  • Cell phones (treated as contraband)
  • Smartwatches
  • Cameras
  • Recording devices
  • Smart/AI glasses

Refuse the pat/frisk or any other search procedure, and you won't get in. The same applies if you show up with prohibited items. Cell phones are considered contraband and are banned from all prison facilities. A good rule: if it can communicate, record, or store data, leave it in the car.
