Plan on bringing documents that verify guardianship. ODOC's visitation rules require it, and NECC follows those rules. Having the right paperwork avoids a wasted trip if staff can't confirm you're allowed to bring the child in.

Note: You'll go through a pat search before visitation. ODOC policy allows staff to pat search both visitors and inmates.

  • Birth certificate (commonly used to show the parent-child relationship)
  • Court papers showing legal guardianship
  • Adoption papers
  • Bring originals or certified copies when you can - these are the easiest to verify at check-in

These guardianship documents are part of ODOC's visitation requirements. If you're unsure whether what you have will be accepted, confirm ahead of time - you don't want to get stuck at the door without the right proof.

Once the child turns 18, the process changes. They're no longer a minor visitor, so they'll need to complete their own Visitor Application Form. Background checks are required for visitors 18 and older, and that application gets reviewed as part of the approval process.

  1. Complete the Visitor Application Form - everyone who wants to visit must submit one.
  2. Wait for the required background check (18+) - ODOC runs background checks on visitors age 18 and older.
  3. Plan for processing time - approval can take up to eight weeks, so submit as early as you can.

4

  • Government-issued photo ID for the adult bringing the child
  • Guardianship documents for the child (birth certificate, court/guardianship papers, or adoption papers - originals/certified copies if possible)
  • Any visitor approval notice/letter you have (if one was provided)
  • Visitor Application Form paperwork (especially if someone in your group is newly applying or has just turned 18)

Reminder: Pat searches are part of check-in at NECC. Bring only what you need and what's permitted.

Missing paperwork? Start with the source. Request a copy of the birth certificate through vital records, or get replacement court or adoption documents from the court that issued them. If you need to mail a Visitor Application Form, address it to the Visitation Unit (not the inmate) and send it to: Oklahoma Department of Corrections, Attn: Visitation Unit, P.O. Box 11400, Oklahoma City, OK 73136-0400.

Tip: Confirm document acceptance with DOC before you travel. Once the background check is complete, the inmate will notify you of the scheduled date and time for visitation.
