Before Your First Visit to NERCC: What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

First visits go smoother when you show up with only what NERCC allows. Pack light, skip the last-minute trip back to the car, and get checked in without surprises.

Keep it simple for your first visit. You can bring two things inside: your ID and your car keys. That's it. Show up with anything else and staff will send you back to lock it in your vehicle, or you may have to return another day.

Note: You must have appropriate footwear to enter the facility.

Anything beyond your ID and car keys stays outside. NERCC's rules are clear: visitors who arrive with handbags, packages, or other personal items will be told to lock them in a vehicle or come back without them. Not sure if something counts as a "personal item"? Leave it in the car.

Reminder: NERCC is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Secure your belongings before you enter.

Leave all electronics behind. Cell phones, iPads, and other devices are prohibited, along with any photography or recording equipment. You also cannot take photos or record video during visits (including remote sessions), so even if you could sneak a device in, you cannot use it.

  • Leave your cell phone in your vehicle
  • Leave iPads and other tablets in your vehicle
  • Leave other electronic devices outside the facility
  • Do not bring cameras or any photography equipment
  • Do not bring video or audio recording equipment

Note: No photos or video recording are allowed during visits, including remote visitation sessions.

NERCC does not allow food, drink, or tobacco use in the visitor’s area. Plan to finish snacks, beverages, and any tobacco products before you go in, and leave them secured outside.

Group size matters. During on-site visitation, a resident can have up to four visitors at one time, and all visitors must be immediate family.

Children can visit, but the decision rests with the parent or guardian who brings them. Juveniles must be deemed age-appropriate by that adult. If there is a dispute about children visiting, the resident is advised to use the court for resolution.

  1. Bring only your ID and car keys. NERCC requires visitors to leave personal items outside the facility, except for identification and car keys.
  2. Wear appropriate footwear. You need appropriate shoes before you can enter.
  3. Lock everything else in your vehicle. If you arrive with handbags, packages, or other personal items, you will be told to lock them in your car or return without them.
  4. Leave all electronics and recording gear behind. No cell phones, iPads, other electronic devices, or photography or recording equipment are allowed.
  5. Skip food, drinks, and tobacco. Food, drink, and tobacco use are not permitted in the visitor’s area.
  6. Keep your group within the rules. On-site visits are limited to four visitors (immediate family only), and any juveniles must be deemed age-appropriate by the accompanying parent or guardian.

Final check: Leave extra belongings secured outside. Electronics, food or drink, and tobacco are not allowed in the visitor area, and the facility is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
