Can You Bring Personal Items to Northern Neck Regional Jail? (Plus the court-clothing exception)
If you’re trying to drop off clothes, books, or other belongings for someone at Northern Neck Regional Jail (NNRJ), the answer is usually no. There’s one narrow exception for Circuit Court clothing, and it requires approval first.
Northern Neck Regional Jail will not accept personal property for an inmate if it’s brought in by friends or family. That includes the common “can I just drop this off?” items - because of security and limited space, the jail does not take personal belongings delivered from outside.
If your loved one doesn’t have money, the jail will provide needed articles. That’s meant to cover basic necessities so someone isn’t left without essentials simply because they’re without funds.
For anything beyond what the jail provides, the normal route is commissary. Inmates can purchase authorized items through commissary, which is how most day-to-day “extras” are handled when personal drop-offs aren’t allowed.
There is one specific exception: local inmates who must attend Circuit Court trials may have clothing brought to the jail by family members. This is restricted to Circuit Court cases - so it’s not a general clothing drop-off option for other court types or routine needs.
- Have the inmate request approval first - to receive clothing for a Circuit Court appearance, the inmate must make the request to the Chief of Inmate Services using the request forms provided to the inmate.
- Wait to arrange any drop-off until it’s approved - clothing should only be brought in after the request has been approved.
After the clothing request is approved, an attorney or family member can arrange delivery by calling (804) 333-6419 ext 6022.
Contact numbers: Main Number: 804-333-6419. Family Liaison: 804-333-6022. PREA: 804-333-6000.
Money works differently than property. Any currency an inmate brings into the jail is credited to the inmate’s account, where it can be used to pay debts and to purchase commissary items.
- ✓ Remaining funds at release or transfer may be mailed to the inmate or the receiving institution.
- ✓ The inmate may pick up a check in person during normal business hours.
