How to Schedule an Attorney Visit at Northern State Prison: The 24‑Hour Rule Explained
Attorney visits at Northern State Prison follow one strict rule: you must notify the incarcerated person's housing facility administrator at least 24 hours in advance, either in writing or by phone.
Northern State Prison follows an NJDOC rule requiring attorneys and attorney representatives to give the housing facility administrator written or telephone notice at least 24 hours before visiting. This isn't just paperwork. The facility needs that time to confirm space, arrange staff coverage, and ensure the incarcerated person can be produced for your interview. Show up without proper notice and you risk delays - or being turned away entirely, even after a long drive.

- ✓ Name of the attorney, or attorney representative
- ✓ Name of the incarcerated person to be interviewed
- ✓ Name of the attorney for whom the representative is acting
- ✓ Date and time of the requested interview
You can meet the 24-hour requirement by sending written notification or calling the incarcerated person's housing facility administrator. Either method works - just make sure your request lands at least a full day ahead so staff can coordinate space, coverage, and the person's availability.
Note: In exceptional circumstances, the facility administrator (or designee) may authorize an attorney visit without prior notice. If you're facing an urgent situation, contact the facility directly to see what they can accommodate.
Expect an ID check at intake. Northern State Prison requires attorneys and attorney representatives to present appropriate identification before entry. Bring whatever you normally use for professional facility visits - staff will verify it before letting you through.
One thing that will stop you at the door: appearing on any Departmental "banned" list. If there's any chance your status could be in question - say, a prior issue at an NJDOC facility - confirm before you arrive. Otherwise, you could lose the entire visit.
