The Warden/Superintendent handles visitor approval. Under TDOC rules, the facility can approve all immediate family members who apply, plus up to eight additional adults - as long as the visitation application is submitted and approved.

The first question most people have: do I count as "immediate family"? TDOC treats immediate family differently than friends or extended relatives, and that distinction matters. Immediate family members get priority consideration for approval. If you're unsure how your relationship is categorized, double-check before submitting your paperwork - you don't want delays or placement in the wrong category.

One more thing: TDOC limits how visiting lists work for non-immediate family. If you're visiting as a friend or other non-immediate relationship, you generally can't be on the visitor list for more than one incarcerated person at a time. If that applies to you, sort it out before applying so your CR-2152 doesn't get held up.

How to Get Approved to Visit Someone at Northwest Correctional Complex (CR-2152)

To visit someone at Northwest Correctional Complex, you must submit TDOC's Visitation Application form CR-2152. Until that form is received and approved, you won't be admitted for visitation - with one narrow exception covered below.

  • Fill out every section completely (don’t leave blanks)
  • Use accurate, current personal information and contact details
  • Answer the questions truthfully (incomplete or false information can cause problems)
  • Sign the application where required
  • Include a current/recent photograph if the instructions call for one

Note: A missing or outdated photo is a common reason applications get delayed. If the instructions request a current photograph, include it the first time.

Once you've completed CR-2152, send it to the Warden/Superintendent at the inmate's institution. They're the approving authority for visitor applications, so getting it to the right place is what kicks off the approval process.

Tip: Submission details can vary by institution. Before you mail anything, confirm the current instructions for how Northwest Correctional Complex wants CR-2152 returned.

Usually, no one gets into visitation until their application is approved. There's one exception: immediate family of newly committed inmates. The facility can allow immediate family visits during a short window while paperwork is still processing - but that temporary allowance can't extend beyond 60 days from the inmate's intake date.

Approval doesn't last forever. CR-2152 applications must be updated every two years (24 months). If you want to stay active on someone's visiting list, plan to submit an updated application on that schedule so your approval doesn't lapse.

Tip: Mark your calendar with the month you submitted your last CR-2152, then set a reminder well before the 24-month point so you have time to renew.

If you want a printed copy of the visitor handbook, you can request one when you apply. TDOC requires that a visitor’s handbook be made available to new applicants who provide a self-addressed stamped envelope with their application, so include a SASE along with your CR-2152 if you’d like the handbook mailed to you.

If you're immediate family and have an active felony conviction record, there are extra requirements. You can only submit a visitor application after six months have passed since your release from incarceration - or since you were placed on probation, community corrections, or parole supervision. You'll also need written consent from your supervising officer or counselor.

Former TDOC or TRICOR employees can face additional scrutiny due to prior access, relationships, or security concerns. If that applies to you, expect the Warden/Superintendent to review your application closely. Be prepared to provide any extra information the institution requests.

Note: If you have a felony history or prior TDOC/TRICOR employment, confirm any extra requirements with the institution before you submit CR-2152 so you don’t lose time to back-and-forth requests.
