Who Can—and Can't—Visit an Inmate at Northwest Correctional Complex (eligibility rules)

Immediate family members who apply can be approved to visit an inmate at Northwest Correctional Complex. Beyond family, the facility allows up to eight additional adult visitors per inmate. That's a hard cap - once those slots fill up, new visitors generally won't be added unless someone comes off the list.

Note: You generally can’t be on more than one inmate’s visitation list unless you’re immediate family.

  • If the visitor is under 18, they must be accompanied by an approved visitor who is the child’s parent or legal guardian.
  • The only exception is if the minor is married to the inmate.

If you're immediate family but have an active felony conviction, there's a waiting period. You can submit a visitor application only after six months following your release from incarceration or your placement on probation, community corrections, or parole supervision. You'll also need written consent from your supervising officer or counselor - get this lined up before applying, because the facility won't approve you without it.

The facility also restricts visits from people with certain ties to the corrections system. Current or former TDOC, TRICOR, or contract agency employees - along with interns and practicum students - can't visit unless they're immediate family of the inmate.

Every visitor application goes through screening. All applicants are subject to an NCIC background check, and the results can determine whether you're approved for the inmate's visitation list.

If you were removed from a non-immediate-family inmate's visitation list - whether the inmate requested it or you did - that removal can follow you. You'll face a one-year waiting period before you can be placed on another non-immediate-family inmate's visiting list.
