How to Add Money at Northwestern Detention Center: Kiosks, Mail, and Online
Getting money to someone at Northwestern Detention Center? You have three options: lobby kiosks, a mailed USPS money order, or online through ConnectNetwork. Just make sure you're putting funds in the right
Northwestern Detention Center accepts deposits in a few different ways, and each one routes money a little differently. You can mail a USPS money order, which will be deposited to the inmate’s commissary account. You can also add funds online through connectnetwork.com (make sure you select the correct facility listing: “NW Regional VA – Adult Detention,” site ID 7). If you’re depositing in person, the facility has Inmate Banker kiosks in the main lobby. One thing that trips people up: tablet money is separate from commissary and phone funds. Tablets are available for inmates, and while some features are free, other tablet features cost money - those tablet funds have to be added online and can only be used on the tablet. Also, if an inmate has cash on them at intake, that cash is deposited into their inmate account as part of the booking process.
If you want to deposit money in person, Northwestern has two Inmate Banker kiosks located in the main lobby. They’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which helps if you’re coming from out of town or trying to handle this outside normal business hours.
- ✓ Cash
- ✓ Cards
At the kiosk, you can choose where the money goes. The system lets you add funds either to a specific phone number for calls or to the inmate’s commissary account. Choose carefully before you confirm the transaction. Money placed on a phone number can’t be transferred over to commissary later, so if your goal is canteen/commissary spending, make sure you’re depositing to the commissary account.
Northwestern accepts money orders that are mailed through the U.S. Postal Service as a way to add funds. Money orders received through the mail are deposited onto the inmate’s commissary account.
- ✓ Write the sender’s full first and last name on the money order.
- ✓ Include the sender’s complete address.
- ✓ Put the inmate’s full name on the money order.
- ✓ Do not mail blank money orders.
- ✓ Do not mail cash.
- ✓ Do not mail personal checks (they will be returned to sender).
Mail the money order using this format: Inmate Name 141 Fort Collier Road Winchester, Virginia 22603
You can also deposit money online through connectnetwork.com. When you search for the facility, look for “NW Regional VA – Adult Detention” and confirm the site ID is 7 so your deposit routes to the right place.
If an inmate has cash in their possession when they are incarcerated, that cash is deposited into an account specifically for them as part of intake.
Other items with monetary value - like debit cards, credit cards, and personal checks - aren’t deposited. Those items are placed into the inmate’s personal property instead.
Note: Northwestern provides tablets, and while some tablet features are free, others cost money. Tablet funds must be added online, and money added to the tablet account can only be used for tablet features (it’s separate from commissary).
