How many people can visit at once? Northwestern's group size rules explained
Planning a visit to Northwestern? The facility limits how many adults and kids can visit at the same time. Here's how the group-size rule works—plus some tips to help you plan.
Northwestern allows only two group combinations: 2 adults and 1 child, or 1 adult and 2 children. If your group doesn't fit one of these, you'll need to decide who comes before the visit.
With limited spots, decide ahead of time who should be there for this visit. If more people want to come than the rule allows, plan separate visits instead of trying to rotate people during the same session.
Northwestern uses a video visitation system. You can visit on-site at the facility or through off-site, on-demand video visits. The group-size limits apply either way.
Age counts when figuring out your visiting party. Visitors must be 18 or older. Anyone under 18 can only visit if accompanied by an adult who's at least 21 years old.
Here's where the age rule and group-size rule overlap: if kids are coming, the adult with them must be 21+. So whether you're bringing two adults plus one child or one adult plus two children, make sure the supervising adult meets that age threshold before finalizing your group.
Heads up: You can use the lockers provided, but you can't give up or swap your visitation seat. If anyone in your party leaves the visitation area, the visit can be terminated.
Quick Family Planning
- ✓ Make sure each person who plans to visit is on the inmate’s approved visitor list before you go.
- ✓ Pick a group that fits the allowed combinations: 2 adults + 1 child, or 1 adult + 2 children.
- ✓ If a minor is coming, confirm they’ll be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old.
Keep time limits in mind. On-site video visits run up to 30 minutes. Off-site on-demand visits are shorter - just 15 minutes.
Bringing kids or juggling coats and bags? Use the lockers so you're not managing everything at the station. Once your visit starts, stay in your assigned seat and keep your group together - leaving the area or swapping seats can end the visit early.
