Picking Up Release Checks and What Happens to an Inmate's Money When They're Released from Northwestern
Money handling at release is one of those details that catches families off guard. Here's how Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center handles cash at intake, how remaining funds come back as a check, and when you can pick it up.
When someone is booked into Northwestern, any cash on them gets deposited into an individual inmate account. It's not kept as loose property to be handed back later in the same form.
Not everything money-related gets deposited, though. Items like debit cards, credit cards, and personal checks go into the inmate's personal property rather than being added to the inmate account.
Any money left in the account comes back as a check. Northwestern makes both Release of Funds checks and Release Checks available for pickup Monday through Friday during two windows: 9:30–11:30 AM and 12:30–4:00 PM.
Can't make it during those hours? Call ahead and ask what other options are available for getting the check to you. Policies can vary by situation, so confirm what they'll accept and what you need to bring.

Note: The person picking up a release check must present ID.
Scheduled inmate releases from the regional jail start at 5:00 AM. That's well before the check pickup window opens, so don't expect to handle the paperwork the same morning someone walks out.
If you're coordinating a pickup around release time, plan around the facility's posted check pickup hours instead of assuming the check can be handled right at release. Call ahead so you don't make an unnecessary trip.
