Video Visit Checklist: How to Avoid Missed Visits, Lost Fees, and Suspensions

Video visits go smoothly when you treat them like an appointment with strict rules. Use the checklist below to show up prepared, protect your fee, and keep your visit from getting cut short or your privileges suspended.

If you're 18 or older, have a valid, government-issued photo ID ready before you try to join a video visit. No valid ID? You can be blocked from participating, even if everything else is set up correctly.

Register using your legal name, exactly as it appears on your ID. The registration record has to match your identification, so double-check the spelling before you submit.

Login and Arrival Timing

  • Log into the GTL system 15 minutes before your home internet video visit starts.
  • Treat your visit as the exact scheduled time slot. If you are late or miss it, fees will not be refunded.
  • Arrive at the AFOI Visitor Center at least 20 minutes before your scheduled video visit.
  • Plan around the exact scheduled time slot. If you arrive late or miss the visit, fees will not be refunded.

Dress and Conduct

  • Wear clothing that covers from the neck to the kneecaps.
  • Wear underwear.
  • If you are using a video visitation center (Visitor Center), wear footwear.

Keep things calm and orderly during the visit. Profanity, loud outbursts, and other disruptive behavior can get the session terminated on the spot.

Security staff can end a video visit if either the visitor or the inmate breaks the rules. The most common avoidable problems are profanity, loud outbursts, and disruptive conduct. Even if you're frustrated, staying composed protects your time together and helps you avoid bigger consequences afterward.

Suspension risk: Violations can get your video visitation privileges suspended for six months. More serious violations can trigger enhanced sanctions, up to and including a permanent ban from the system.

One common reason visits end early has nothing to do with your connection or your behavior: if the inmate needs to use the restroom, the visit will be terminated. Know this going in so it doesn't catch you off guard.

  1. Join early (home visits): Be logged into GTL 15 minutes before the start time.
  2. Arrive early (Visitor Center visits): Get to the AFOI Visitor Center at least 20 minutes before your scheduled slot.
  3. Protect the appointment time: Visits run only during the exact scheduled time slot, and fees are not refunded for late arrivals or missed visits.

If a visit gets cut short, write down what happened right away: the date, your scheduled start time, how long you were connected, and what you saw on screen. Then contact the video visitation provider or the facility using the contact information from your account or confirmation. Keep expectations realistic. Fees are not refunded for late arrivals or missed visits, so be clear and specific about the interruption and timing when you reach out.
