Nueces County Jail Money Order Checklist: What to Write (and What Pen to Use)

Nueces County Jail accepts only two types of paper deposits: cashier's checks and money orders. Stick to one of those if you're mailing funds - anything else won't get posted to the inmate's trust account.

Skip the personal check. Nueces County Jail doesn't accept them for inmate deposits, and it's one of the most common reasons payments get returned.

Mail your payment to the correct address. Nueces County has a dedicated P.O. box specifically for money orders and cashier's checks - don't drop it off at the jail itself.

Make it payable to

  • Include the inmate’s date of birth
  • Include the inmate’s Nueces SID# (use the Nueces SID# - not the State SID#)

Pen rule: Use black or blue ink only. No silver, gold, metallics, or glitter gel pens.

Don't hand-deliver paper payments at the Jail Information Booth or the McKinzie Jail Annex. And don't bring money orders, checks, or cash during visitation - they won't be accepted.

Common Errors and Fixes

  • Sending a personal check instead of a cashier’s check or money order
  • Making the payment out to something other than “Inmate Trust Fund,” c/o the inmate receiving the money
  • Leaving off the inmate’s date of birth
  • Writing the State SID# instead of the inmate’s Nueces SID#
  • Filling it out with the wrong ink (anything other than black or blue; including gel/metallic/glitter colors)
  • Trying to hand it in at the Jail Information Booth, at the McKinzie Jail Annex, or during visitation hours
  • Mailing it in a way that’s misdirected or improperly filled out (these will be returned to the sender)

Need it there faster? Deposit kiosks are available 24/7 at the Main Jail lobby (901 Leopard Street) and the McKenzie Annex (745 North Padre Island Drive). They accept cash ($5 bills or higher) and Visa/MasterCard credit or debit cards.
