What You Can't Bring to Ocean County Jail: Complete Visitor Prohibited Items Checklist
Ocean County Jail is strict about what visitors can bring inside. Show up with the wrong item and you could lose your visit entirely—so do a quick check before you leave home.
Personal electronics are a no-go at Ocean County Jail unless they're department-issued. Cell phones and cameras are obvious, but the ban also covers pagers, tape recorders, laptops, radios, DVD/CD players, iPods and MP3 players, Bluetooth devices, and personal flash drives. Basically, if it runs on batteries and you brought it from home, leave it behind.
Tip: Leave all electronics at home or locked in your vehicle. Ocean County Jail does not allow personal electronic devices in the visiting area.
Personal items aren't permitted in the building - this catches a lot of first-time visitors off guard. Plan to enter with just your photo ID. In the visiting area, gum, cigarettes, lighters, beverages, and food are all prohibited. Skip the snacks and leave anything you'd normally carry in a pocket or bag.
- ✓ Gum
- ✓ Cigarettes
- ✓ Lighters

- ✓ Personal items (not permitted in the building)
For contact visits, dress code is enforced. Tank tops, flip flops, and high heels aren't allowed. Skirts and shorts must hit at or below the knee. Low-cut shirts and exposed midriffs will get you turned away. Leave dangling earrings, jackets, and purses at home. And yes - no cellphones, even though it bears repeating.
Tip: When in doubt, keep it simple - plain, modest clothing and minimal accessories helps you avoid getting flagged at check-in.
Keep your packing list short: a valid, government-issued photo ID. That's it. Everything else - personal items, electronics, bags - should stay in your car or at home. Bringing extras will only slow you down or get you turned away.
You'll go through screening before reaching the visiting area. Expect a metal detector and thermal scanner, plus a potential search. If staff find something prohibited - or you don't follow the rules - the Shift Commander/OIC can deny your visit on the spot. Visits can also be terminated for non-compliance once they've started.
- Arrive with only what you’re allowed to carry - plan to have your photo ID and nothing else.
- Present valid government-issued photo ID - you’ll need it to be admitted.
- Clear screening - you must go through the metal detector and thermal scanner and be subject to search before entering the visiting area.
- Be ready to lose the visit if you don’t comply - the Shift Commander/OIC may deny (or end) a visit for non-compliance with visiting rules and regulations.
