What You Can't Bring to Ocean County Jail: Complete banned-items checklist

The baseline rule at Ocean County Jail is simple: visitors cannot bring personal items into the building. If you're unsure whether something counts as a "personal item," assume it does and leave it behind.

Before entering the visiting area, you'll go through security screening. That means a metal detector, a thermal scanner, and a possible search. Travel light: the only thing you're allowed to bring inside is your photo ID.

Leave your phone in the car. Cell phones and camera phones are prohibited unless the device is department-issued. The same goes for cameras of all types, even if you don't plan to take photos.

Laptops are off-limits unless they're department-issued. Personal audio and video devices are also prohibited, including radios, DVD or CD players, and iPods or other MP3 devices.

Wireless and storage accessories will stop you at the door too. Any Bluetooth device is prohibited unless department-issued, and the same applies to personal flash drives or other flash media.

Reminder: Ocean County Jail prohibits all personal electronics and recording devices in the visiting area. That includes phones (and camera phones), cameras, laptops, audio players, Bluetooth devices, and flash drives, unless the item is department-issued.

Skip the snacks and drinks. Beverages and food are not allowed in the visiting area.

Even small, easy-to-forget items can trip you up. Gum is not allowed in the visiting area.

Do not bring smoking items inside. Cigarettes and lighters are not allowed in the visiting area.

Quick tip: Food, beverages, gum, cigarettes, and lighters are all banned from the visiting area. Leave them behind so your visit isn't delayed or refused.

If you need personal belongings with you for the day, keep them out of the building. Ocean County Jail doesn't permit personal items inside. The only thing you can carry in is your photo ID.

  1. Sanitize before you start - Clean your assigned video visitation station using the cleaning supplies the facility provides.
  2. Sanitize again after the visit - Wipe down the station after your visit is over, again using the facility-provided supplies.

Note: Everyone must clear the metal detector and thermal scanner. Visitors are also subject to search before entering the visiting area.
