What to Expect During Security Screening at Oklahoma State Penitentiary

When you step onto Oklahoma State Penitentiary grounds, you're automatically agreeing to be searched - it's called "presumed consent." This means a pat-down is part of entry. The same goes for your vehicle. Drive onto prison property, and staff can search your car.

Here's the deal: everyone entering the perimeter gets a pat search. Staff will check the outside of your clothing and have you empty your pockets. Wear simple clothing, carry minimal items, and leave nothing loose in your pockets - you'll move through faster and with less hassle.

Reminder: “At a minimum” means the pat search is standard for everyone entering the perimeter - no special suspicion is required.

A pat search is the baseline. But if staff have reasonable suspicion or probable cause to believe you're bringing in contraband, the warden (or a designee) can order a more thorough search. Strip searches require probable cause and warden approval. Drug-detection dogs may also be used.

  • A more thorough search ordered by the warden/facility head (or designee) when there is reasonable suspicion or probable cause of contraband
  • A strip search, requested only when the warden/facility head or designee determines there is probable cause the visitor possesses contraband
  • A drug-dog search as part of a more intrusive screening response
What to Expect During Security Screening at Oklahoma State Penitentiary

Most visits go smoothly when you show up prepared. Entering the grounds means consenting to a pat-down and vehicle search - and reasonable suspicion can trigger more. Keep things simple: bring only what you need, make your vehicle and belongings easy to inspect, and follow staff directions right away.

  • Leave anything that could be considered contraband at home or locked away before you arrive
  • Keep your pockets empty (or close to it) so the pat search is quick and straightforward
  • Wear simple clothing that doesn’t create unnecessary questions during a pat-down
  • Bring your vehicle onto the grounds only if you’re comfortable with it being searched
  • Keep your car tidy and accessible for inspection (clutter can slow a vehicle search down)
  • Follow staff instructions during screening without arguing - back-and-forth can lead to delays and closer scrutiny

Caution: If staff develop reasonable suspicion or probable cause that you’re bringing in contraband, the warden or designee can order more intrusive screening, including drug-dog searches and (with probable cause) a strip search.
