Before you go: Onondaga Correctional Facility dress code and religious headwear searches
Dress code is one of the easiest ways to get turned away at the door. Here’s what Onondaga Correctional Facility flags as prohibited, plus what to expect if you wear religious headwear.
Skip the hooded sweatshirts, sheer or see-through clothing, and anything that shows your midriff or back. Plunging necklines, low-cut tops, and sleeveless shirts are also off-limits. Ripped or torn pants won't fly, and shorts or skirts need to hit at least mid-thigh.
If you wear religious headwear, plan for it to be checked at entry. The facility states that religious articles such as kufis, yamakas, and hijabs are subject to search upon entry into the facility, so give yourself extra time and expect staff to follow that process before you’re allowed in.

- ✓ Skip hoodies/hooded sweatshirts
- ✓ Choose clothing that isn’t see-through or sheer
- ✓ Avoid tops/outfits that expose your midriff or back
- ✓ Avoid plunging necklines or low-cut tops
- ✓ Don’t wear sleeveless tops
- ✓ Leave ripped/torn pants or shorts at home
- ✓ Pick shorts/skirts that are at least mid-thigh length (longer is safer)
- ✓ If you’ll be wearing a kufi, yamaka, hijab, or other religious article, build in extra time for the required entry search
- ✓ Plan your arrival around registration: complete registration at least 1 hour before your visitation round’s scheduled start time (and you may be able to register up to 4 hours before)
Note: Religious headwear is allowed, but it can be searched at entry. Expect a brief delay and follow staff directions so you don’t lose your visit.
