Understanding Onondaga’s visit frequency rules: one visit per day and two per week
Onondaga limits how often someone can be visited — and it catches families off guard when multiple people want to come the same week. Here's how the
At Onondaga, the visit limits are set around the incarcerated person’s schedule. They can have only one visit per day, even if more than one person wants to visit. There’s also a weekly cap: at most two visits per week total, so once those two visits happen, any additional in-person visit attempts that week won’t fit within the facility’s limits.
Quick rule to remember: One visit per day, and no more than two visits per week for the incarcerated individual.
Onondaga also does not allow split visits. In practical terms, you can’t break a visit into separate segments or “trade off” visitors as a workaround to squeeze in more than the allowed number of visits. Plan as if each visit is a single, complete session - because that’s how the facility counts it.
Warning: Trying to split a visit won’t get around the visit limits - it’s not allowed.
Planning Tips
- ✓ Pick the two days that matter most each week, since the incarcerated person can have at most two visits total that week.
- ✓ Avoid double-booking different family members on the same day - only one visit can happen per day.
- ✓ Decide ahead of time who will use each visit (for example, one person this week, someone else next week) so you don’t waste a trip.
- ✓ Keep a simple shared note (paper or phone) of which days have already been used, so you don’t accidentally exceed the weekly cap.
- ✓ If multiple people want time, rotate visitors week-to-week instead of trying to fit everyone into the same week.
If in-person limits make it hard to coordinate, remote video visits may help you stay connected. Eligible incarcerated individuals may have up to two half-hour remote video visits per day, but it’s based on availability - so it’s best to plan early and be flexible about times.
- Start with the weekday time windows - remote video visits use set half-hour slots on Monday through Friday (for example: 9:00–9:30 am, 9:45–10:15 am, 10:30–11:00 am, 12:30–1:00 pm, 1:15–1:45 pm, 2:00–2:30 pm).
- Choose a backup slot, too - because visits are subject to availability, it helps to have a second option ready.
- Book the time you can actually make - each remote video visit is a half hour, and eligible incarcerated individuals may have up to two per day if slots are available.
Reminder: Remote video visit slots are availability-based. The listed weekday examples include 9:00–9:30 am, 9:45–10:15 am, 10:30–11:00 am, 12:30–1:00 pm, 1:15–1:45 pm, and 2:00–2:30 pm.
