How to Apply for a Ride Along with Onslow County Sheriff's Office
Getting a ride along approved is pretty straightforward once you know what's required: submit your forms, pass a background check, and show up with valid ID and realistic expectations.
You'll need a clean record to qualify. The Onslow County Sheriff's Office requires applicants to be of good reputation with no felony convictions or serious misdemeanors. Approval isn't guaranteed - every application gets screened, and you can be disqualified.
The Sheriff's Office runs a local criminal records check covering at least the past five years of your Onslow County residency. Lived here less than five years? They'll also pull records from your previous state or county - this happens alongside the local check, not instead of it.
Forms Approvals Timing
- ✓ Complete a Ride Along Request Form
- ✓ Complete a Liability Waiver
- ✓ Receive approval from the Division Major before you can participate
Plan ahead. You need to submit your request at least 48 hours before your intended ride, so give yourself time for paperwork and review.
You must be 18 or older, with two exceptions. Active Explorer Post members can participate after completing at least 25 hours with the program - a parent or guardian must sign the Liability Waiver. High school seniors may also qualify when the ride along is part of a senior project.
What to Bring Prohibited Items
- ✓ Bring valid photo ID (driver’s license, state-issued ID card, or military ID)
- ✓ Be ready to show that ID to the assigned deputy before you’re allowed into the patrol vehicle
- ✓ Keep your ID on your person for the entire ride
Weapons rule: Ride along participants aren’t allowed to carry weapons, except qualified law enforcement officers covered by LEOSA. If you’re eligible under LEOSA and you’re not in uniform, your weapon must be carried concealed.
Ride alongs happen on Saturdays and Sundays during two time blocks: 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m. Keep these windows in mind when you submit your request.
Recording rule: You may not make any audio, video, photo, recording, or other digital reproduction during the ride unless you have the Sheriff’s express consent.
