Intake typically wraps up within that 30-day window. But if it stretches longer, there's an exception: your loved one can request a special visit with immediate family members. • Confirm whether your loved one is still in intake status, because normal visitation is not allowed during intake.
  • If intake is running past 30 days, ask whether your loved one has requested a special visit with immediate family under the Reception Center’s visiting procedures.
  • Figure out whether you qualify as “immediate family” under DOC rules, since the special-visit exception is limited to immediate family members.
  • Gather whatever proof of relationship you may need, because verification of immediate-family status may be required.
  • As soon as your loved one is removed from intake, be ready to move quickly: at the offender’s request, the Warden or designee (Assistant Warden or higher) may authorize immediate-family visits while the visitation application is still being processed.

Who counts as immediate family? Louisiana DOC defines this broadly: parents, siblings, legal spouse, children, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, legal guardians, and step/half/adoptive relationships. It also includes people with the same relationship to your loved one as their legal spouse has.
