Setting Up Video Visits with the Getting Out Visits App
Video visits are a practical way to stay connected when you can't make it to the facility in person. Here's how to get set up with the Getting Out Visits app, understand your visit options, and confirm you're eligible to visit.
Video visits work like this: you connect through an app on your phone or tablet, while your loved one uses their electronic tablet or a video kiosk inside the facility. Start by downloading the Getting Out Visits app. You'll use it to conduct video visits and, when required, to schedule them.
- ✓ Personal computer
- ✓ Internet connection
- ✓ Webcam
- ✓ Microphone
- ✓ Recent web browser
Note: Don't want to use the mobile app? You can also conduct video visits from a computer using a recent web browser, as long as you have a webcam and microphone.
There are two ways video visits work: on-demand or scheduled. On-demand lets you start a visit as soon as one is available. Scheduled visits are booked ahead of time for a specific time slot.
Reminder: Many visits are by appointment only. If on-demand isn't available, you'll need to schedule your visit as an appointment through the prison where the person is housed.
Only people on the incarcerated person's approved visitors list can do video visits. A completed visitor application has to be approved by facility staff before any visit can happen. If you're not approved yet, scheduling in the app won't fix that. Get the application process completed first.
- Ask your loved one to request a blank visitor application from the facility.
- Have them mail the blank application to you (the prospective visitor).
- Complete the application and return it to the prison facility where your loved one is currently housed.
- Wait for staff approval before you try to visit. A visit cannot occur until the facility approves the completed application.
Troubleshoot and Confirm
- ✓ Check your internet connection first (unstable Wi‑Fi is a common reason calls fail)
- ✓ Make sure your webcam and microphone are connected and allowed by your device/browser settings
- ✓ Close and reopen the app, or refresh/restart your web browser if you’re visiting from a computer
- ✓ If you’re using a computer browser, try a different recent browser
- ✓ If possible, try a different device to rule out a device-specific issue
Even when everything is set up, plans can change. Call the prison the day before a scheduled visit to confirm the facility's visitation status. Also keep in mind that visits are by appointment only, so you may need to contact the prison where the person is housed to schedule your appointment.
Tip: If the video visit keeps failing after you've checked your camera, mic, and internet connection, use the Getting Out Visits app's help/support options for technical assistance.
