What to Expect When Visiting a Louisiana Jail: ID, Searches, and Prohibited Items
A jail visit can feel stressful the first time—mostly because you don't know what to expect at the door. Here's what Louisiana facilities typically require: photo ID, visitor searches, and what to leave behind.
If you're 18 or older, bring a photo ID every time. Staff check it during entry, even if you've visited before. Show up without it? You'll be turned away - no exceptions.
Security screening goes beyond emptying your pockets. Louisiana correctional facilities can search your property, your vehicle, and your person - and that includes minors. If you're bringing kids, give them a heads-up in simple terms: there will be checks at the entrance, and staff may give specific directions to follow.
Screening can include metal detectors, ion scanning, and K-9 searches. These happen before you enter the visiting area, and K-9s may also come through during the visit itself. The point is safety and preventing contraband. Under Louisiana DOC guidance, trained staff conduct searches professionally and work to minimize any indignity while still doing their job.
Prohibited Items Checklist
- ✓ Controlled substances
- ✓ Alcoholic beverages
- ✓ Marijuana
- ✓ Tobacco and tobacco-related items
- ✓ Cameras
- ✓ Video recording equipment
- ✓ Audio recording equipment
- ✓ Electronic devices (including cell phones, pagers, and similar devices)
Warning: Don't risk it with prohibited items. Bringing them can get you denied entry - and create bigger problems than a missed visit. Leave them at home or locked in your vehicle before you go inside.
- Arrive 38 minutes early if you’re registering at the lobby kiosk (LPCC) - Visitors to Lafayette Parish Correctional Center who register via the lobby kiosk must arrive 38 minutes before the scheduled visit.
Bring photo ID for every visitor 18 or older, and expect to show it each time. Build extra time into your day for screening - visitors, their property, and vehicles can all be searched, and that includes minors. Keep things simple by leaving prohibited items (especially phones, electronics, tobacco, and anything that could be considered drugs or alcohol) in your vehicle or at home. During screening, follow directions and stay calm. Searches can include metal detectors, ion scanning, and K-9s. Cooperating respectfully helps everything move smoothly.
