Requesting a Special Visit at NMCD Facilities (Including PNM): When and How to Apply
Need a visit that falls outside normal visiting hours or rules at an NMCD facility (including the Penitentiary of New Mexico, PNM)? You'll submit a Special Visit Request form, CD-100201.3. NMCD lists a few examples: traveling more than 500 miles, meeting with a prospective employer, or a law enforcement visit.
What Counts Examples
- ✓ You’re traveling over 500 miles and need a visit arranged around that trip.
- ✓ A prospective employer needs to visit.
- ✓ A law enforcement officer needs to visit.
- ✓ The visit needs to be handled as a formal special visit request (not a routine visit) and must be approved in advance through NMCD’s special-visit process.
Note: NMCD policy says the facility must give the inmate written information about visitation procedures (including special visits) within 24 hours of arrival. If your loved one is newly arrived, they should receive guidance on how special visits work soon after intake.
The form you need is the Special Visit Request, CD-100201.3. It's part of NMCD's standard visitor paperwork (alongside the Visitor Application for Visiting Privileges, CD-100201.1). When asking staff how to submit, use the exact form number - it helps avoid confusion.
- Request prior initial approval - your request has to be initially approved by one of these roles: the Unit Manager, Programs Director, or Classification Supervisor.
- Wait for the request to move forward - that initial sign-off is the required first step before the facility can make a final decision on the special visit.
Getting initial approval isn't the end of the process. Your request still needs final sign-off from the facility's Deputy Warden before the visit is actually authorized.
Submission and After
- ✓ A completed Special Visit Request form (CD-100201.3).
- ✓ A clear explanation of why you’re requesting a special visit (for example, travel over 500 miles, a prospective employer visit, or a law enforcement visit).
- ✓ Any supporting paperwork you have that helps explain the request (for example, documentation tied to the reason for the special visit).
Once the facility receives your request, it moves through NMCD's approval chain: first the Unit Manager, Programs Director, or Classification Supervisor reviews it, then the Deputy Warden gives final approval. Working against a deadline? Build in time for both steps. Special visits are approved in advance - not at the door.
Follow-up: If visiting privileges are suspended or terminated, NMCD says the facility will notify the visitor in writing, and you can appeal using the appeal process in the Inmate Visitation policy. Keep copies of anything you submit and any written notices you receive.
