Bring an approved photo ID - this is non-negotiable. Pierce County Jail accepts a valid driver's license, state ID, or other official identification that includes your picture, physical description, and signature. Staff check all three to verify you're on the visiting list, so double-check your ID before you leave home.

Onsite sign-up opens 45 minutes before the visiting session and closes 15 minutes before it starts. Show up late or without an appointment, and you'll be turned away. Aim to arrive early so you're not rushing through check-in.

Visits last one hour. If you're coordinating rides, childcare, or work, plan around that window.

Note: All visitors are checked for outstanding warrants and no-contact orders. If you have a warrant, you can be arrested when you arrive.

Follow staff directions and keep things simple. Bringing prohibited items or ignoring visiting rules can end your visit early - and may affect your ability to come back. If you're unsure whether something's allowed, leave it in your car or at home. Show up with just what you need to check in.

Practical Tips Minors and Timing

  • Bring an approved photo ID for every adult visitor (valid driver’s license, state ID, or other official photo ID with a picture, physical description, and signature).
  • If a minor is visiting, make sure the child is accompanied by a parent, grandparent, or documented legal guardian.
  • Plan headcount carefully: with one adult, a maximum of two children may visit.
  • If there are two adults, only one child may accompany them.
  • If you’re a legal guardian (not the parent or grandparent), bring documentation that shows guardianship.

For the smoothest check-in, arrive near the start of the sign-up window rather than cutting it close. The extra time helps if there's a line or you need to sort out paperwork before the window closes.

If you get turned away at sign-in and need clarification on visiting rules or next steps, call Custody at (253) 798-4590 or Administration at (253) 798-4668.
