How to Send Mail to Someone at Pinellas County Jail: the Paperless Process

3 min read Verified from official sources

Pinellas County Jail routes all personal mail through Smart Communications. Address your envelope to Smart Communications - Pinellas County Jail, include the incarcerated person's full name and ID number on the "Attention To" line, and mail it to P.O. Box 9129, Seminole, FL 33775-9129. If the name or ID number is missing, the letter gets returned to sender. Some jail information pages have listed a different P.O. Box number in the past, so double-check the current address before mailing anything time-sensitive.

Your mail doesn't go straight to the housing unit as paper. Postcards, letters, greeting cards, and pictures are all scanned into the Smart Communications system. Your loved one views the scanned version electronically on an inmate tablet or a wall kiosk.

Don't send originals you want back. The jail advises mailing only copies of documents or photos, because original items are not necessarily returned after scanning.

Tip: Create a free MailGuardTracker.com account to track delivery status, get notifications if mail is rejected, and download copies of mail after it's been received and processed.

Attorneys have an electronic option for legal and privileged communications. Pinellas County Jail allows legal or privileged mail to be sent electronically through SmartInmate at no cost to the inmate or attorney. Sending legal mail by postal service? Use the jail's legal-mail addressing format. Address it to: LEGAL MAIL, Inmate Name and Docket #, 14400 49th Street North, Clearwater, FL 33762.

Your loved one reads scanned mail electronically, not the original paper you sent. Pinellas County Jail makes scanned postcards, letters, greeting cards, and pictures available through the Smart Communications system on an inmate tablet or wall kiosk. Beyond postal mail, SmartInmate messaging is also available, including the ability to send photos. All inmates receive eight free messages per month.

Want a copy of what was processed? The jail directs people to MailGuardTracker.com, where you can download scanned mail tied to your tracking account. After release, your loved one can also use SmartInmate to download their items using their inmate number and password.
