What Happens to Your Letters After You Mail Them to Pinellas County Jail

Starting April 15, 2025, Pinellas County Jail digitizes all incoming mail - personal and legal - through Smart Communications. Postcards, letters, greeting cards, and photos are scanned into the system rather than delivered as paper inside the facility.

Note: Once scanned, your mail becomes available electronically for the inmate to view. The original paper item isn't delivered.

Since everything gets digitized, assume you won't get originals back. The jail recommends sending only copies of documents or photos - keep your originals at home.

Correct addressing is critical. Missing information can stop the process before it starts. Send personal mail to: Smart Communications - Pinellas County Jail, Attention To: (INMATE NAME and ID NUMBER), P.O. Box 9204, Seminole, FL 33775-9129. Leave out the name or ID number, and your mail gets returned.

  1. Create a free MailGuardTracker.com account - this is the tool used to follow your postal mail as it moves through the process.
  2. Track delivery status - once you’re signed up, you can check where your mailed item is in the delivery/processing timeline.
  3. Watch for rejection notifications - if your mail is rejected, the account can alert you.
  4. Download your processed mail copies - you can download copies of mail that has been received and processed.

Tip: MailGuardTracker.com is free, and it’s one of the easiest ways to get rejection notifications and download copies of mail that’s been received and processed.

After your letter or photo is scanned, the inmate views it electronically. Pinellas County Jail provides wall kiosks and portable tablets in housing units where inmates can access their scanned mail, along with video visitation, electronic messaging, and photos.

Good to know: These kiosks and tablets handle more than mail - they're also used for video visits, electronic messaging, and photos.
