What You Can and Can't Mail to an Inmate at Pitt County Detention Center (Checklist)
All mail for Pitt County Detention Center inmates goes through a scanning center first, so format matters. Follow this checklist to keep your letter from getting rejected or delayed.
Keep each envelope short: 10 pages or less. Got more to say? Split it into separate envelopes so everything can be processed.
Stick to standard paper - 8.5 x 11 inches or smaller. Oversized stationery, large cards, and extra-large prints won't make it through scanning.
Quick check before you seal the envelope: 10 pages or less, and every page is 8.5" x 11" or smaller.
Anything bulky or hard to scan will get flagged. That means no glitter, glue, tape, 3D elements, or cards with electronic components like lights, music, or animation.
Tip: Skip stickers, layered “pop-up” cards, and any card that has parts attached or built in - keep everything flat and paper-only.
Don't send magazines, books, or packages through the mail processing center yourself. These items won't be handled like regular letters and likely won't reach your recipient.
- ✓ No hard cover books will be accepted
- ✓ No more than two paperback books will be received
- ✓ Each paperback must be no larger than 7" x 9" x 2"
Want to send books? You'll need to follow the facility's rules directly - not the scanning center. Pitt County allows paperbacks only (no hardcovers), up to two at a time, within their size limits. Send them through the proper channel, not bundled with your scanned mail.
- Write a complete return address - Include a complete, legible return address with your first and last name, or the mail will not be scanned.
- Address it exactly for scanned mail - Use “Pitt County Detention Center,” the inmate’s name, the inmate ID number, Facility ID 5159, and PO Box 18247, Greensboro, NC 27419.
Best practice: Use plain, flat pages (8.5" x 11" or smaller), keep it under 10 pages, and don’t add tape/glitter/3D pieces - those are common reasons mail gets stopped at processing.
