Visitation

What You Need to Know Before Your First Visit to Placer Jail (Auburn & South Placer)

Your first visit goes a lot smoother when you handle the basics ahead of time. Confirm custody details, bring the right ID, arrive early for check-in and screening, and avoid anything that could get your visit denied or cut short.

Before you head out, look up the inmate on Placer County's "Who's In Custody" site so you're working from current information. Then plan your arrival around check-in: all personal visitors must check in at least 30 minutes before the visit start time. Show up too close to the start and you can lose the visit entirely, even if you made the trip.

Bring an acceptable photo ID. Placer Jail accepts a driver's license, military ID, passport, immigration card, or state identification card, as long as it has your photo. Expired IDs can still work if they're no more than two years past the expiration date and the photo still resembles you.

Keep your group small. Visits are capped at three visitors per inmate, per visit, and the allowed combinations are specific: two adults and one minor child, or one adult and two minor children. If your group doesn't fit those combinations, someone will be turned away.

Metal Detector and Removals

  • Expect a walk-through metal detector. All visitors must pass through it, or you can be denied entry.
  • Remove metal items from your clothing before you go through, including jewelry such as watches, chains, and medals.
  • Clear out anything else that can set off the alarm (for example, coins or a belt buckle) so you do not get stuck repeating the screening.

Note: Visitors and their immediate property can be searched at any time while on the facility premises. If you refuse a search, your visit will be prohibited or ended.

Leave your devices behind. Cell phones, computers, tablets, and smartphones are not allowed in any visiting area. Also know that personal visiting phones are monitored and recorded, so keep your conversation to things you're comfortable having documented.

Reminder: Loud, boisterous, or rude language is not tolerated during visits.

Even with valid ID and everything else in order, some people aren't eligible for in-person visits. If you were in Placer County custody within the past 120 days (including same-day book-and-release), you cannot visit an inmate in person. This restriction does not apply to video visits.

You also may not visit if you've been convicted of a felony and served time in state prison. Placer County takes this seriously: being on jail grounds without written consent from the commander is a felony under Penal Code 4571. If this situation could apply to you, don't assume you can "just try" to visit in person.
