What CDCR families should know about Securus taking over phone, video, and messaging
Securus is now the communications provider for CDCR facilities. This affects how you'll connect—by phone, video, and electronic messaging—and whether you need to set up an online account.
Securus is positioning itself as the system families will use to connect with someone incarcerated in a CDCR facility. That includes telephone calls, video calls, and electronic messaging.
According to Securus materials, the rollout includes telephone calls, video calls, and electronic messaging for CDCR, with a September start date mentioned. Treat that as a reported timeframe - actual availability depends on when each service goes live.
Good news if your main concern is staying reachable by phone: Securus says you won't need an online account just to receive free telephone calls. That's helpful if you're keeping things simple or assisting an older family member who doesn't use apps.
Video calls and electronic messaging are different. Securus says you'll need an account for both once those services launch. If you plan to use either, be ready to set one up.
For remote video visits, Securus describes Video Connect as fully web-based. Friends and family can schedule and join video sessions, and attorneys and public officials have access too. You can participate from anywhere with internet using the free Securus app, a computer, or a tablet.
Actions Prepare
- ✓ If you plan to use video calls or electronic messaging once they’re available, be ready to set up a Securus account.
- ✓ If you only plan to receive free telephone calls, Securus says you don’t need an online account for that.
Since video is part of the rollout, think ahead about what you'll need on your end - having the right setup ready when video calling becomes available will save you time later.
For the latest on what's live and what's still rolling out, check Securus's CDCR information page. That's where they're posting rollout timing and provider details.
Looking for specifics - like when tablets will be implemented or what costs apply? Securus directs families to the CDCR tablets page for schedules and pricing. Their CDCR pages also have user-guide materials with more detailed instructions.
