Before you can visit at PWCC, you need approval. Every potential visitor must submit a visiting application and pass a background check - no exceptions. I'd recommend reading PWCC's

Want the fastest processing? Use the online Visiting Application. Idaho DOC specifically recommends it for quickest service, and you'll avoid the back-and-forth of mailing paper forms.

For adults, the process is straightforward: complete the standard visiting application and wait for your background check to clear. Fill it out carefully - small mistakes like missing information can slow things down. Minors are handled differently. A child's visit requires extra paperwork so the facility can confirm identity and legal authority.

Minors: A child must have a separate form called “Visiting Application – Minor” to be approved to visit PWCC.

  • A certified copy of the minor’s birth certificate
  • A copy of a court order granting legal guardianship or a Power of Attorney Delegating Limited Powers for Visitation

After you submit your application, expect the approval process (including the background check) to take two to four weeks. Plan around that window - especially if you're timing a first visit around a birthday, school break, or travel. Still under two weeks? Just wait. Past the four-week mark? Follow up to check if anything is missing or still pending.

What happens next: Once the application process and background check are completed, visiting-room staff notify the resident, and the resident is responsible for letting you know the decision.

Checklist Prepare Before Apply

  • Read the “Visiting Rules for Residents and Visitors” so you understand requirements before you apply
  • If a minor will visit: get a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate
  • If a minor will visit: get a copy of the court order granting legal guardianship or a Power of Attorney Delegating Limited Powers for Visitation

The Visiting Rules for Residents and Visitors covers details that affect both approval and entry on visit day. Review them before you submit your application, then again before you travel - you don't want to be caught off guard by a restriction you didn't know about.
