Before Your First Visit to Polk County Jail: What to bring and what to leave at home

Bring your photo ID. Polk County Jail requires it for entry, and you'll be turned away without one. Before you leave home, double-check that it's in your pocket or purse.

Leave the kids at home. Polk County Jail doesn't allow visitors under 18, so arrange childcare before your visit. Make sure everyone in your group meets the age requirement.

Non-contact visits: Polk County Jail uses a non-contact setup - you won't be sitting together in the same space.

Be ready for a search at check-in. All visitors are subject to search. If you're not comfortable with the request, you can leave before the search happens - just reschedule for another day.

Know the limits before you go. Each inmate gets two visits per week, and each visit lasts 30 minutes. If multiple people want to visit, coordinate ahead of time so those two weekly slots don't get used up by accident.

Practical Tips

  • Bring your picture ID (don’t assume you can “talk your way in” without it)
  • Arrive early so you have time for check-in and screening
  • Leave extra items in your car; travel light
  • Dress conservatively (avoid revealing clothing or anything that could be refused at the door)
  • If you’re unsure about a specific item, check Polk County Jail’s current visitation policy before you go
