How to Visit Facility
Visiting at the Powledge Unit follows TDCJ's visitation rules, so a little preparation goes a long way. Start with the basics below, then verify the schedule and check for cancellations before you travel.
Plan around the standard visit length. A regular in-person visit is two hours, and that clock starts once both you and the person you're visiting are present. Traveling more than 250 miles one way? You may be eligible for an extended visit, but it's not automatic. The warden decides, and even when approved, visits max out at four hours depending on time and space.
Remote video visits are also available for eligible visitors. These use a kiosk and must be scheduled through the vendor's website. You can have one remote video visit per month, lasting up to 60 minutes.
Bring photo identification. TDCJ maintains a list of acceptable photo ID types, so check it ahead of time and make sure yours qualifies.
Note: This article does not include vendor names, fees, or exact check-in procedures because those details were not available. Use the "What to verify" section to confirm anything that could affect your trip.
Steps
- ✓ Create your own Online Visitation Scheduler account (TDCJ staff cannot create visitor accounts for you).
- ✓ Bring an acceptable photo ID (use TDCJ’s acceptable ID list to double-check before you go).
- ✓ Expect a regular in-person visit to last two hours, starting when both you and the incarcerated person are present.
- ✓ If you are traveling more than 250 miles one way, plan for the possibility of requesting an extended visit (warden’s discretion), but do not assume it will be approved.
- ✓ If an extended visit is allowed, it may be up to four hours if time and space allow.
- ✓ If you want a remote video visit, schedule it through the vendor website.
- ✓ Track your time. Remote video visits may occur once per month for up to 60 minutes.
- Check the schedule and cancellations - Confirm the unit visitation schedule and verify visitation has not been canceled. Unit-wide visitation cancellations are posted on the TDCJ homepage.
- Call before you drive - Visitors should call the unit for final confirmation before traveling.
Set up your Online Visitation Scheduler account before you plan your visit. You'll need to create the account yourself. TDCJ staff cannot create one for you. If something is wrong with your account details, staff can help with updates, but only after the account already exists.
If you're traveling more than 250 miles one way and want an extended visit, confirm ahead of time whether the warden will permit it. Even when extended visits are approved, the actual length (up to four hours) depends on the warden's discretion and available time and space.
For remote video visits, check the scheduling process on the vendor website before you commit to a date. These visits use a kiosk, happen once per month for up to 60 minutes, and availability can vary. Verify how that time is tracked and what appointment slots are open.
Reminder: Always check the TDCJ homepage for unit-wide visitation cancellations before you travel.
