What You Can and Can't Do During a TDCJ Contact Visit: hugging, holding hands, and privacy expectations
TDCJ contact visits allow some physical contact, but the limits are tight. Most visits are also monitored, which shapes what "privacy" actually means in the visiting area.
A contact visit at TDCJ doesn't mean full privacy or unlimited physical affection. All inmate visits may be electronically monitored (attorney-client visits are the exception). Go in expecting that what you say and do can be observed and recorded. Stay within the contact rules, and your visit won't be interrupted.
Privacy expectation: Attorney-client visits are the exception. Other visits may be electronically monitored.
Hugging and kissing are allowed, but only at specific moments. TDCJ permits one embrace or kiss at the beginning of a contact visit and one at the end. That's it. Even if continued hugging feels natural, doing so during the visit falls outside what the rules allow.
Holding hands is permitted too, with one clear boundary: hands must stay on top of the table, in full view of staff. If your hands drop below the tabletop or out of sight, it can be treated as a rule violation, even if nothing else is going on.
Quick rule: One embrace or kiss at the start, one at the end. Holding hands is allowed only on top of the table, in full view of staff.
TDCJ treats visitation as a privilege, not a right. Visits can be temporarily restricted for an inmate or visitor if rule violations occur or security concerns come up. Even if you're following the physical-contact limits, other issues can still lead to a restriction or a pause in visits.
- Plan for sudden cancellations - Visitation may be temporarily discontinued during a unit lockdown.
- Expect shutdowns after serious incidents - Escapes or disturbances can trigger a temporary stop to visitation.
- Be ready for emergency suspensions - A health or safety emergency can also discontinue visitation.
- Understand restrictions can be targeted - Separately from unit-wide shutdowns, visitation may be temporarily restricted for an inmate or a visitor if rule violations occur or security concerns exist.

- ✓ Assume your visit may be electronically monitored (attorney-client visits are the exception)
- ✓ Keep any hand-holding on top of the table, in full view of staff
- ✓ Limit embracing and kissing to once at the beginning of the visit
- ✓ Limit embracing and kissing to once at the end of the visit
Reminder: Staying inside the contact rules matters. Visitation can be temporarily restricted for rule violations or security concerns, and most visits may be electronically monitored.
