What Happens to Letters, Photos, and Drawings Sent to Pueblo County Detention Center

2 min read Verified from official sources

Pueblo County Detention Center converts all U.S. Mail to digital format (this policy started April 20, 2022). The original letters, photos, and drawings are destroyed after scanning.

Since April 20, 2022, all U.S. Mail sent to someone at Pueblo County Detention Center gets converted to digital format. Letters, printed photos, kids' drawings, greeting cards: anything paper inside the envelope will be scanned.

Exclusions Legal Publisher

  • Legal mail is excluded from the detention center’s mail-to-digital scanning process.
  • Parcels arriving from a publisher are excluded from the mail-to-digital scanning process.

After scanning, the detention center destroys the original physical items. Your loved one won't get to hold the actual paper or artwork. Keep this in mind before mailing anything sentimental you can't replace.

When your mail arrives, staff scan it and deliver a digital version to the inmate electronically. They'll see what you sent, but not the original envelope or paper.

Need the correct booking number for addressing mail or setting up messaging? Use the Pueblo County Sheriff website's inmate lookup page to search for people currently in custody. For other questions, call the detention center main office at 719-583-6125.

Want to get a message through quickly? You can send a digital message directly through the Getting Out mobile application. This is also a good option if you don't want to risk losing original photos or drawings in the scanning process.

Practical Tips

  • If you want to send a quick note without mailing paper items, use the Getting Out mobile application.
  • If you are sending legal mail, follow the legal-mail channel since legal mail is excluded from scanning.
  • If you are sending books or similar items from a publisher, send them as publisher parcels since those are excluded from scanning.
  • For regular U.S. Mail in an envelope (letters, photos, drawings), expect it to be converted to digital format for electronic delivery.
  1. Look up the person in custody: Use the Pueblo County Sheriff website’s inmate lookup page to find the booking number.
  2. Call if something does not match: Contact the Pueblo County Detention Center main office at 719-583-6125 if you have questions about locating someone or what you are allowed to send.

Note: Original letters, photos, and drawings are destroyed after scanning. If you need to preserve the original, don't send it through regular U.S. Mail to this facility.
