How to Send Mail to Someone at Rappahannock Regional Jail (TextBehind & Photo Rules)
Mail rules at Rappahannock Regional Jail (RRJ) are stricter than most people expect, especially when it comes to photos or anything extra tucked into a letter. Here's how to get your mail delivered without it bouncing back.
Rappahannock Regional Jail uses a third-party company called TextBehind.com to handle personal inmate correspondence. Don't assume you can just send a regular letter directly to the jail. If personal correspondence goes straight to RRJ when it shouldn't, it gets returned. For day-to-day letters and photos, use the TextBehind process.
When mailing via U.S. Postal Service, follow RRJ's address format exactly. Put your full name and return address in the upper left corner of the envelope (missing return addresses can get mail rejected). For the main address, use the incarcerated person's legal name and inmate identifier, then send it to the Phoenix, Maryland P.O. Box listed below. Even with TextBehind handling personal correspondence, this is the format RRJ publishes for USPS mail.
Copy-ready address format: Rappahannock Regional Jail, VA, Inmate’s Name, Inmate Identifier, P.O. Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131.
Photo Rules
- ✓ Photos must be no larger than 4" x 6".
- ✓ Do not send more than 20 photos.
- ✓ Polaroid photos are not allowed.
- ✓ Sexually explicit photos are not allowed.
Warning: Sexually explicit pictures are prohibited. If you send them, they will not be accepted.
Prohibited Items and Alternatives
- ✓ Do not mail blank envelopes. Inmates must buy them through commissary.
- ✓ Do not mail blank paper. Inmates must buy it through commissary.
- ✓ Do not mail postage stamps. Inmates must buy them through commissary.
- ✓ Do not mail pre-paid envelopes. Inmates must buy them through commissary.
Want to help someone write back? Skip the temptation to tuck in supplies. At RRJ, blank envelopes, blank paper, stamps, and pre-paid envelopes are not allowed through the mail. These items have to be purchased through commissary. The workaround: have your loved one buy those items inside, and focus your mail on allowed correspondence and photos that follow the rules above.
One more thing: with RRJ's current mail setup, treat anything you send as something you may not get back. If you have questions about submitting letters or images through TextBehind (or what formats they accept), go straight to TextBehind for current instructions and support. For USPS mail, use the RRJ addressing format exactly so your envelope doesn't get held up or returned.
