Visitation

What to Bring (and What to Leave in Your Car) When Visiting Reno County Correctional Facility

Visiting someone in jail can feel stressful, especially when you're worried about getting turned away at the door. Reno County Correctional Facility keeps the "what can I bring?" list very short, so a little prep goes a long way.

Plan to walk in with only two things: your valid photo ID and your keys. The visitor handbook is clear that no other property is allowed in the visitation room. Your ID needs to be a valid state or government photo ID, and you'll be asked to show it before you can enter. One common surprise: IDs issued by KDOC or by other jails or prisons are not accepted here, even if they have your photo on them.

Bring an ID with your date of birth: Your ID must be a valid state or government photo ID that shows your date of birth. KDOC IDs and other jail or prison ID cards are not accepted.

Leave electronics behind. Reno County Correctional Facility prohibits cellular phones, cameras, and other electronics in the visitation room. If it can record, photograph, connect to the internet, or store data, assume it needs to stay out. Plan ahead so you're not scrambling at check-in.

No drinks are allowed in the visitation room. Finish your coffee or water before you go inside.

Health care exception: Health care items are allowed into the visitation area.

Don't show up with items you're hoping to hand to the person you're visiting. No packages of any kind are accepted at the time of visitation. If you need to send something, the handbook states that all correspondence must be done by mail.

If you bring a purse, bag, paperwork, or anything else hand-carried, plan to leave it in your vehicle. The facility also has lockers in the lobby where you can secure personal items before heading into the visitation room. The smoothest visits are the ones where you arrive already pared down to ID and keys.

Heads-up: The facility states it will not be held responsible for lost or stolen property during visitation.

Build a little extra time into your plan. Entry isn't just "sign in and go." Any person entering the Reno County Correctional Facility is subject to search.

Without the right ID, your visit won't get off the ground. You must show a valid state or government photo ID with your date of birth before entering, and the facility will not accept KDOC IDs or ID cards issued by other jails or prisons. Everyone who enters is subject to search, so bring as little as possible and be ready for the entry process.

Before you're admitted, officers will check visitors for warrants and no-contact orders. If everything comes back clear, you'll be allowed into the visitation room.

Tip: If you're unsure whether your ID is acceptable or what to expect at entry, call ahead before you make the trip.
