What you can and can't do during a visit at Rensselaer County Jail
Visits go more smoothly when you know the contact and movement rules ahead of time. Here’s what Rensselaer County Jail allows during a visit—and what will get stopped quickly.
At Rensselaer County Jail, hugging is limited to the start and end of your visit. You can physically embrace your loved one when you first greet each other and again when you’re saying good-bye, but not throughout the visit.
Hand holding is allowed during visitation. If you’re unsure what counts as acceptable contact, keep it simple and stick to hand holding during the visit, with hugs only at greeting and goodbye.
No other personal contact is allowed beyond hugs at greeting and goodbye and hand holding during the visit. Cross that line and staff will step in.
You and the inmate must remain seated the entire visit. Stay at your assigned spot - no standing, switching seats, or moving around the room.
If you’re bringing a child, be ready to keep them close the entire time. Small children must remain seated and supervised, and infants and small children must stay seated and are not allowed to wander around the visitation room.
Visits are scheduled by the inmate, not the visitor. Your loved one has to make the appointment using the jail’s normal visitation request procedures, so your part is to coordinate with them and show up for the scheduled time.
